PURPOSE:To obtain a distinctive correlation signal within a range wherein the surface shape of a liquid jet is maintained and an analytic range and to measure a jet speed accurately by providing a photosensing means which varies in level with the degree of the surface shape. CONSTITUTION:Sensors 50A, 50B, 50C, and 50D are arranged over the run axis of a jet 13 from the head box 10 of, for example, a paper making machine to the Fourdrinier wire 12 run by a roll 11 and the jet 13 is irradiated with light beams emitted by the sensors 50 from a light source 51 through light emission fibers 52; and reflected beams are photodetected by the sensors 50 and converted by photo-amplifiers 54 into electric signals corresponding to the quantities of light, so that the signals are recorded in a memory 56 through a filter 55. Then, signals A and B, A and C, and A and D are switched by a switch 58 and sent to an analyzer 59 to obtain mutual correlation functions RAB, RAC, and RAD, which are transferred to a controller 57 to compare shapes of each peak value and a value near the peak value; and the flow speed is obtained by conversion and displayed on a display device 60, the speed is fed back to a head box controller 61, and the memory 56 is reset.
