A high-voltage high-capacity galvanic cell comprising an alkali-metal negative electrode and an alkali halide/aluminium halide electrolyte which is liquid at room temperature and contains SO2 can be used as a rechargeable battery. The SO2 is dissolved in the electrolyte and the single positive electrode is composed of a dichalcogenide layered compound, preferably of titanium disulphide.
