To transmit useful information via a transmission path at higher speed, the useful information occurring at a lower speed in the form of data words, two consecutive equal-length data words are transmitted on the transmission path, one data word containing one half and the other data word containing the other half of the useful information data word. A sync word is transmitted at the start and at the end to identify the data packet formed from a multiplicity of data words. The sync word differs from the data words due to a specific marker in a specific bit position. Sync words are transmitted continuously on the transmission path until a data terminal provides information for transmission.
