4-Acylbenzylsulphonium salts of the formula I <IMAGE> in which n = 0 or 1, m = 1 or 2, and m + n = 2 and X is a non-nucleophilic anion, can be prepared by reacting readily accessible p-acylbenzylsulphonium halides with a salt A<+>X<-)<A<+> = a proton, ammonium cation or cation from main group 1) in solvents. They are advantageous photoinitiators for cationically curable mixtures and photocurable recording materials, in particular for the production of relief images and resist patterns.
