PURPOSE:To obtain a means detecting a pattern to be separated, which is considered a joint part by separating the pattern by way of trial and recognizing it again if it cannot be recognized due to an error in terms of segmenting a character. CONSTITUTION:Coordinates in rows of character patterns A and B, which can be obtained from coordinate detection parts 1 and 2 are a pair of XHmin and XHmax' and that of Xmin' and Xmax', respectively, and XHmin'=Xmin' and XHmax'not equal to Xmax' hold. If the comparison part 3 knows that said coordinates establish said relationship, it means that the pattern A and B are discontinuous. In order to attain said coordinate relationship, a conversion part 4 may carry out conversion twice. The character pattern under said coordination relationship is compared with the initial character pattern, whereby the pattern which is considered the joint part can be detected.
