The read off shaft, which is located in the carriage which is to be moved up and down, is used to cause the reader to view the read off scale at a right angle. Read off errors which arise due to oblique viewing when reading off are thereby avoided. An incandescent lamp which illuminates the read off scales in a manner free from shadows (activated at the front of the carriage) and magnifying optics produced specifically for this purpose guarantee the highest accuracy of read off.
