In a method for detecting leaks in a planar main seal which is arranged below a main drainage layer in a landfill and is inclined in a roof profile, use is firstly made of a monitoring drain (7) which is arranged below a main drainage line in a monitoring drainage layer (4) between the main seal (3) and a monitoring sealing surface. A monitor probe is used in the monitoring drain to detect an entry point of leakage water. A strip-shape region of the main seal in which the leakage point which is to be more accurately identified must be situated ends via this entry point. For this purpose, indicator liquid is introduced into the main drainage layer (2) via the main seal at a plurality of selected introduction points (31-33). After a time has elapsed in which the indicator liquid can trickle with the leakage water as far as the opening point of the monitoring drain, a check is made as to whether traces of the indicator liquid occur at the opening point. The leakage point (29) is situated below one of the introduction points if the indicator liquid introduced into this introduction point occurs at the opening point. On the other hand, the leakage point is located above an introduction point (e.g. 31, 33) from which no indicator liquid can reach the opening point. As a result, the region of the main seal strip in which the leakage point is situated can be precisely located. <IMAGE>
