The intention is, in the case of a device for the automatic preloading and damping of belt tensioning pulleys, preferably those in motor vehicles, consisting of a spring-loaded piston which is arranged in the bore of a housing, is supported in axially displaceable fashion and acts on the tensioning pulley, to achieve an improvement by simple and compact means and, at the same time to maintain reliable and maintenance-free operation. This is achieved by the fact that segments (11) are provided at that supporting end of the spring (10) which is remote from the piston (9) and that the segments (11), which rest in sliding fashion on the piston skirt (9) and are separated by a gap (13), have supporting surfaces (11') which lie obliquely opposite the respective mating surface (12') at an angle alpha to the piston axis, pressing the segments (11) towards the piston skirt (9'). <IMAGE>
