The invention relates to a process for the biological treatment of contaminated soils and to a device for carrying out the process. A gas which contains nutrients for microorganisms is introduced into the soil horizontally or vertically in a predetermined grid pattern in such a way that microorganisms which degrade even complicated synthetic organic substances colonise each of the zones where gas is introduced into the soil. The gas is passed through tubes which are made of non-porous, gas-permeable material and which run horizontally or vertically through the soil. The tubes may be armed. The tubes are placed in such a way that they form loops, whereby the gas is circulated. The development of a biofilm is brought about on the external surface of the tubes.
