Addition of a branch fitting to a pipe

A branch fitting 2 is formed from a piece of pipe which has one end cut to conform to the outer surface of the main pipe 1 to which the fitting 2 is to be connected. The branch fitting 2 carries electrically conductive wire 5 on its surface at the cut end. A connection is formed by holding the fitting against the main pipe at the cut and passing a heating current through the electrically conductive wire 5. Material at the contact fuses and a weld is formed. The pipe 1 and fitting 2 can be interconnected by cutting away a portion of the main pipe 1 after welding.
