PURPOSE:To minimize a circulating current and eliminate a distortion of an output voltage waveform of a cycloconverter by making circulating and load currents controllable separately from each other. CONSTITUTION:A circulating current-type cycloconverter body is composed of a positive side converter 2, a negative side converter 3 and a DC reactor 4 with an intermediate tap. An output voltage instruction of the positive and negative side converters 2, 3 is given from a phase control circuit 7. An input signal of the phase control circuit 7 is made of an output signal of a load current controller 8, a circulating current controller 9 and a compensating circuit 10. An adder 11 outputs a deviation of a detected signal of a load current detector 12 from a load current instruction and the load current controller 8 outputs an instruction signal of voltage necessary for load according to said deviation. The circulating current controller 9 outputs an instruction signal of an output voltage difference between the positive side converter 2 and the negative side one 3 according to a deviation of a detected signal of a circulating current detector 14 from a circulating current instruction.
