PURPOSE:To easily control exposure at high performance by obtaining one type of picture feature amount from each picture element comprising a main picture and the color density of each picture element comprising a background picture area, sorting out scenes of color original pictures according to said amount, selecting one exposure arithmetic equation and deciding the exposure. CONSTITUTION:Position information on the main picture area and the background one is transmitted to an average color density calculation part 64, and used for calculating an average color density as a picture feature amount. An average color density calculating part 65 reads the color density of each picture element included in the main picture area out of a RAM 45, and calculates a red average density, a green average density and blue average density. In the same manner, an average color density calculating part 66 calculates an average color density in the background picture area. The respective average color densities in two areas are transmitted to a grey density difference calculation part 67 which calculates the difference between grey densities in two areas. Scene sorting-out information is transmitted to an exposure arithmetic equation selection part 68 which selects exposure arithmetic equations prepared for respective scenes. A feature amount calculating part 69 calculates feature amounts from the color densities of the picture elements, and transmits them to the exposure calculating part 68, whereby they are substituted for the selected exposure arithmetic equation.
