PURPOSE:To expand a using scope in the processing of a Japanese document by sharing a dictionary for a KANA (Japanese syllabary)/KANJI (Chinese character) conversion and a KANJI/KANA conversion and converting mutually and freely between the KANJI and KANA. CONSTITUTION:When a converting object character column is KANJI, KANJI dictionary information correcting to the KANJI of the converting character column in read from a KANJI dictionary information memory means 02, the converting object is made from the position of a converting dictionary memory means 01 designated by the KANJI dictionary information, the KANJI and idiom coincident to the character column are retrieved and the KANA is outputted. When the converting object character column is KANA, the KANA dictionary information to the KANA of the character column of the converting object is read from a KANA dictionary information memory means 03, from the position the converting dictionary memory means 01 designated by the KANA dictionary information, KANA coincident to the converting object character column is retrieved and the KANJI and idiom are outputted. At the front step of the converting dictionary memory means 01, the KANJI dictionary information memory means 02 and the KANA dictionary information memory means 03 are equipped, and therefore, the converting dictionary memory means 01 can be shared as the dictionary of the KANJI/KANA conversion and the KANA/KANJI conversion.
