A surface sleeve for an intaglio plate cylinder or offset plate cylinder is produced by fitting a nickel base sleeve 20 on a supporting core 10. Both the outer peripheral surface of the core and the inner and outer surfaces of the base sleeve are circular cylindrical. A thin layer 21 of copper or nickel is electrolytically deposited on the nickel cylinder 20, and over this a copper layer 22, preferably of bright copper, is deposited. In the case of photogravure, this outer copper layer has a thickness equal to or slightly greater than the desired maximum depth of copper for the printing design, which is later formed in the outer surface of the surface sleeve. In the case of offset printing, a chromium layer, in which the printing design is etched, is applied to the outer copper layer. After etching or engraving of a printing design in the outer surface of the sleeve and after any chroming of the etched or engraved surface, the exposed ends of the surface sleeve are cut off, the thickness of the metal layers having been increased by the electrolytic deposits. <IMAGE>
