New process comprises reacting an acetoacetic ester of formula ROOCCH2COCH3 (I) with an unsatd. ester of formula R1R2C=CHCOOR3 (II) in the presence of a basic catalyst to give a 4 carboxycyclohexane- 1,3-dione of formula (III), where R = 1-6C alkyl, R1,R2 = H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkylcycloalkyl, opt. substd. aryl or opt. substd. hetrocyclic, provide that at least one of R1 and R2 is alkylthioalkyl, and where alkyl moieties are 1-18C; and R3 = 1-6C alkyl or cyclocalkyl. Pref. alkyl gps. are 1-6C. Esp. R = Et; R1 = H, R2 = EtSCH(Me)CH2-; R3 = Me.
