In a method of rolling metal e.g. steel for mfr. of plate or sheet with a predetermined range of thickness through a sequene of passes, variations in deformation resistance of the metal along a longitudinal direction are detected and resulting variations in rolling force in the finishing pass are estimated using a rolling force estimation equation and a deformation resistance equation. A distribution of thickness of the metal is calculated and physically formed before entrance to the finishing pass and metal is rolled to cancel the variation in the rolling force at the entrance of the pass.
