A process for steam reforming hydrocarbons boiling at up to 350 DEG C. comprises reacting them with steam at a temperature in the range 450 DEG to 1000 DEG C., in the presence of a catalyst comprising Ni or Co present as the metal or as a compound reducible to the metal, a refractory support material, and 0.001 to 0.5% by weight of a platinum group metal present as the metal or as a compound reducible to the metal. Preferably the process is operated for synthesis gas or low CH4 content gas production at 600-1000 DEG C., 1-50 atmospheres and a steam ratio of 1.5-6.0. Alternatively, gases containing substantially large quantities of CH4 and useful in town gas manufacture may be made at 450-700 DEG C., a pressure above 100 p.s.i.g. and a steam ratio of 1.5 to 4. Examples are given.ALSO:A steam reforming catalyst composition comprises Ni or Co present as the metal or a compound reducible thereto, a refractory support material and 0.001-0.5% or platinum group metal present as metal or compound reducible thereto. Platinum group metal is defined as Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt. Additionally there may be present an alkali or alkaline earth metal compound. The refractory support may be an oxide of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Al, Si, Ti, Zr, Th or Cr or mixtures thereof. Alternatively an aluminous cement e.g. "Ciment Fondu" (Registered Trade Mark) may be used. Examples are given. |
