1,033,079. Cable and wire couplings. AMP Inc. April 2, 1965 [April 6, 1964], No. 14015/65. Heading H2E. A tap connector assembly comprises a C- section aluminium receptacle 1 having one arm placed about a portion TL<SP>1</SP> of transmission line TL and the other arm receiving portions 3<SP>1</SP> of a stirrup-shaped copper wire loop 3, and a wedge-shaped aluminium plug 2 having opposed arcuate surfaces 9, 10 (see Fig. 3, not shown) for engaging the portions TL<SP>1</SP> and 3<SP>1</SP> to trap them in the receptacle. The plug and receptacle are more fully disclosed in Specification 959,884. The free ends' 7, 8 of the portions of the loop 3 are either placed in the arm in butt relationship, or, as shown, they are bent at right angles to engage in apertures 6 and may be deformed to provide rivet heads engaging the outer surface of the receptacle. A tap clamp 14 carrying a tapwire 15 is secured to the loop 3. The plug 2 is inserted into the receptacle 1 by means of a tool T (see Fig. 2, not shown) having a ram R driven by an explosive charge such that the plug is driven against a swaging die 12 to swage out a portion 13 (see Fig. 3, not shown) that engages the receptacle to retain the plug therein, the tool T being described is Specifications 1,030,058 and 1,030,059. When the plug is driven home it removes any fouling from the surface of the transmission line. The right-hand end (see Fig. 3, not shown) of the receptacle may be swaged down over the end of the plug. |
