PURPOSE:To reduce unevenness in the quality of heat treated products by controlling the amount of a carrier gas introduced according to the surface area of each metallic material. CONSTITUTION:A carrier gas and an enriching gas are introduced into a furnace 1 through automatic valves 2, 3, respectively. The valve 2 for the carrier gas is controlled with a setting unit 4. The amount of the carrier gas introduced is previously set in the unit 4 according to the surface area of a metallic material A. The valve 3 for the enriching gas is controlled with a regulator 5. While the controlled amounts of the gases are introduced, the material A is subjected to carburization or other heat treatment. By this method, heat treated products having no unevenness in quality are obtd.
