PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent gradation over the entire density by selecting a correction characteristic different from each line so as to apply gradation correction. CONSTITUTION:The inputted picture data are inputted to a lookup table (LUT) 1 in synchronism with synchronization clock 109 and gradation correction is applied. The picture data 101 from the corrected LUT 1 is inputted to a D/A converter 2, where the data is converted into an analog value corresponding to the inputted digital picture data and the analog picture data 102 are inputted to a negative input of the comparator 6. A triangle wave generating circuit 5 generates a triangle wave 105 according to a timing signal 108 and the wave is inputted to a positive input terminal of the comparator 6. The comparator 6 outputs an output signal 103 having a pulse width corresponding to the input picture data corresponding to the analog picture data 102 and the triangle wave 105.
