PURPOSE:To enable the useful life of an ink ribbon to be markedly prolonged, by using an ink ribbon having regions each of which has a height equal to the n-times of the width of characters to be printed, and changing over the region of the ink ribbon opposed to a printing head in response to a signal outputted from a means for detecting one round of the ink ribbon. CONSTITUTION:An ink ribbon 1 is provided with four (1st-4th) ink ribbon regions 1a-1d each of which has a width equal to the height of characters to be printed. First, the 1st ink ribbon region 1a of the monochroic ink ribbon 1 is opposed to a printing head, and printing is conducted. When it is detected by a detecting means that the ink ribbon 1 has made one round, the ink ribbon 1 is shifted by a predetermined amount by a shifting means based on a detection signal from the detecting means, thereby opposing the 2nd ink ribbon region 1b to the printing head and perform printing. Similarly, the 3rd and 4th ink ribbon regions 1c, 1d are sequentially opposed to the printing head by shifting the ink ribbon 1 by the predetermined amount, and printing is conducted.
