The mechanism is used for cleaning the drive chain of a bicycle provided with a gear change unit. It comprises a housing contg. at least one rotatable chain wheel and a top cover which fits on the housing and contains a second rotatable chain wheel arranged so, with the cover in position, the two chain wheels define a curved path for the chain. Brushes are provided in the housing and/or cover to engage the chain as it passes. The housing contains two rotatable chain wheels spaced so the chain wheel can enter between them to define a zig-zag chain path.
