Neutralising waste sulphuric acid

Magnesium silicate (I) esp. as olivine is added to the waste acid to obtain a prod.d- comprising aliq. (II) rich in MgSO4 and SiO2 gel (III) solids. - Reaction mixt. contg. the silicate (I) and acid is pref. continuously stirred; (I) is pref. present in excess and has a small grain size to increase reaction rate.
