A reciprocating compressor suitable for generating high pressures comprises at least one plunger piston or one cylinder sleeve consisting of a material selected from cast iron, steels and tungsten carbides and at least one sealing element which includes a composite material which combines (a) at least one metal alloy selected from bronzes and titanium-based alloys and (b) at least one polymer selected from polytetrafluoroethylenes, polyimides and polyimide-amides or a sintered graphite-silver compound. Application is to the compression of a fluid to a delivery pressure greater than or equal to 150 x 10<5> Pa (150 bars).
