PURPOSE:To obtain the picture with high quality by discriminating an edge region and a non-edge region automatically, applying a halftone processing suitable for respective regions and averaging a picture data to extract the edge. CONSTITUTION:Whether or not edge information is included in an input data is discriminated and the content of gradation processing is switched automatically depending on the result. The input of an edge discrimination means 154 discriminating edge information is provided with an averaging means 149 averaging plural picture element data. Thus, even when 3X3 size edge extraction filter is used, no mis-discrimination is caused.
