PURPOSE:To prevent mis-discrimination of edge detection by discriminating the edge region and the non-edge region automatically to apply proper halftone processing and applying edge extraction after plural data are averaged. CONSTITUTION:The edge region and the non-edge region are discriminated automatically and a halftone processing suitable for respective regions is applied. Further, a 2X2 averaging circuit 149 is connected to an input terminal of an edge extraction circuit 152 and after plural picture element data are averaged, the edge is extracted. Thus, even when dot processing is applied to an original picture, no mis-discrimination is caused for the edge discrimination.
