PURPOSE:The selective oxidation of L-pantothenate salt and/or L-pantolactone is carried out using a specific microorganism in Nocardia or the like to produce the titled compound which is used as a precursor of D-pantolactone with industrial advantage. CONSTITUTION:The selective oxidation of L-pantothenate and/or L-pantolactone is effected by cultivating or using cell bodies of at least one selected from microorganisms in Nocardia, Rhodococcus, Nocardioides, Mycobacterium, Streptoporangium, Streptomyces or Chorinebacterium to produce the titled compound which is used in the production of pantothenic acid, advantageously. In the cultivation, a specific compound such as ethanol, sorbit or 1,3-propanediol is added to the culture medium or to the substrate solution to increase the oxidation ability of the cell bodies with more inexpensive compound than in the known method.
