PURPOSE:To permit formation of a protective layer on the desired surface of a casting simultaneously with casting by adding a binder to a desired powder material and kneading the mixture then subjecting the mixture to compaction molding to form a plastic sheet having a uniform thickness, sticking such sheet onto the prescribed surface of a casting mold and casting a molten metal into the mold. CONSTITUTION:The binder is added to at least one kind of the powder material selected from the group consisting of metals, alloys, intermetallic compd. and ceramics and after the mixture is kneaded, the mixture is subjected to compaction molding to obtain the flexible sheet 4 having the uniform thickness. The sheet 4 is stuck to the prescribed surface in the casting mold consisting of a cope 2 and a drag 3 and thereafter the molten metal is cast through a sprue 1 into the mold to form the protective layer on the desired surface of the casting. The protective layer having the resistance to wear, corrosion, heat, etc., is thereby formed on the desired surface of the casting to the uniform thickness.
