NEW MATERIAL:The cyclopentenone derivative of formula I (R is H or alkoxycarbonyl; R<1> is H or lower alkyl; R<2> is lower alkyl, hydroxymethyl, OH-protected hydroxymethyl, carboxyl, alkoxycarbonyl or aryloxycarbonyl; X is ethynylene or vinylene provided that when R is H, X is not vinylene). EXAMPLE:2-Methoxycarbonyl-2-[ 2(Z)-pentenyl ]-3-[8-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy)-2- octynyl]-4-cyclopentenone. USE:An antitumor agent. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein R is COOR<4> (R<4> is H or alkyl) can be produced by using 2-diazo-3-oxocarboxylic acid ester of formula II as a starting raw material and successively converting the material to the compounds of formula III and formula IV.
