PURPOSE:To improve the yield of B2O3 and the utilization factor of Al by using coarsely-grained boric anhydride and Al to reduce the reaction heat per unit time and to prevent the splashing of raw materials when a thermit reaction is carried out by using boric anhydride, an ion oxide, Al, and a combustion improver. CONSTITUTION:When a thermit reaction is carried out by using boric anhydride, an iron oxide, Al, and a combustion improver (e.g., sodium chlorate), the grain diameters of >=80% of the boric anhydride are controlled to 0.5-2mm, and the grain diameters of >=50% of the Al are adjusted to 0.3-0.1mm. The opera tion condition is regulated so that the heat generated per unit weight is fixed at 670-680kcal/kg. Since the diameters of the coarse grains of the boric anhy dride and Al are thus regulated, the contact area is reduced, hence the reduction of the iron oxide is preceded and followed by the reduction of B2O3, and the heat generated per unit reaction time is decreased to 7X10<5>-8X10<5>kcal/min. Since the generated heat is thus reduced, the raw materials are not splashed during the reaction, and the yield of B2O3 and utility factor of Al are improved.
