NEW MATERIAL:The optically active liquid crystal compound of formula I (4<=m<=14; 0<=l<=7; 1<=k<=8; * represents asymmetric carbon). EXAMPLE:(+)-4'-Octyloxy-4-5-methylhepthyloxybiphenyl. USE:A liquid crystal substance. A chiral substance. Utilizable as a liquid crystal mixture for constituting a TN or phase-transition liquid crystal display element. It is also utilizable as an SmC* liquid crystal mixture. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula II with p-toluenesulfone chloride and reacting the resultant compound of formula III with the compound of formula IV.
