PURPOSE:To enhance engine efficiency by furnishing a means to hinder heat transfer between a fluid in the space bordered by a vessel, in which the working fluid is encapsulated, and a member accommodated in the vessel with possibility to slide, and another fluid situated otherwhere. CONSTITUTION:This starling engine includes a heater 14 to heat and cool a working fluid encapsulated in a vessel 13, a refrigerator 15, and a regenerator 16. In said vessel 13, a displacer 17 and a piston 18 are accommodated with possibility to slide, and operation of this piston 18 drives the load 19 on a pump, compressor etc. Here, a rod 20 is equipped with insulation 22 to prevent the heat generated in the gas spring space 21, bordered by the vessel 13 and rod 20 as part of the displacer 17, from transmission to over the displacer 17, while insulation 23 if recessed in the walls of the vessel 13 to prevent the same heat from transmission to the working fluid in compression spaces 24, 25 through the walls of the vessel 13.
