PURPOSE:To correct the result of recognition into other candidate character even after the result of recognition is edited by selecting one character from N-set of recognition candidate characters being the result of recognition, and arranging and editing the selected character and a control code representing the set of (N-1)-characters as a sentence. CONSTITUTION:A recognition section 4 obtains the feature quantity of a recognition object character segmented by a character segment section 3, the result is collated with the feature quantity of characters registered in a dictionary 5 in advance and similar characters up to 10th order are used as recognition candidate characters. An edition section 6 stores the characters of the 2nd to the 10th candidates into a sentence memory 7 among the recognition candidate characters inputted from the recognition section 4, and the 1st candidate character and the control code designating the location in the sentence memory 7 for the 2nd to the 10th candidate characters are used as a lump. Then the sentence arranged in matching with the character segmentation order obtained by the character segment section 3 is stored in the sentence memory 7, the sentence stored in the memory 7 is displayed on a display section 9, the sentence stored in the sentence memory 7 is edited to correct the result of recognition in response to the command of an operation section 8.
