An hydraulically-operated tool holder having two cutting tools which are indexable through 180 degrees to and from the operative position comprises a rotary support member (2) (Figs. 1 and 3, not shown) to which a tool support (3) is screwed, mounted within a housing (1) for rotary displacement to and fro through 180 degrees; an annular piston member (16) surrounds and is slidable axially of and rotatable partially about the support member (2) under the action of hydraulic pressure upon one or other of its end surfaces (22, 23). The member (16) has two inclined slots (17, 18) in one of which (17) is located a stationary guide pin (19) fixed in the housing (1). When axial sliding movement of member (16) occurs the pin (19) traverses the length of inclined slot (17) and causes the member (16) to turn through 90 degrees. A pin (6) fixed in the rotary support member (2) projects through the other inclined slot (18) into a semicircular guide groove (8) in the housing (1), the combined effect of the slots (17, 18) with the pins (19, 6) being to turn the member (2) and tool support (3) together through 180 degrees as the piston member (16) is displaced from one end position to the other. Return movement of the member (16) under reversed application of hydraulic pressure returns the toolholder (3) and support member (2) to the original position. The ends of the slots (17, 18) include sharply bent portions which act to lock the pin (6) in its terminal positions against shaped abutment surfaces (28) of abutment members (27, 29) located in the housing (1) at the end of the semicircular groove (8). Holes (24, 25) in the toolholder housing are provided for attaching the toolholder to a sliding carriage of a lathe. |
