This method, applied to a device for supplying oxygen to a patient using a transtracheal catheter 2, fitted with a valve 6 intended to allow or prevent oxygen passing through the catheter, is characterised in that it consists in using the catheter 2 as a pressure sensor and controlling, as a function of the value measured at the end of the catheter situated on the trachea side, the closure of the valve 6 at least during the expiration phase.
