PURPOSE:To form an image with required picture quality independently of the kinds of originals with a simple constitution by forming a slit member so that the slit width can be varied and the slit can be controlled in accordance with original information. CONSTITUTION:The exposing slit member 7 is formed so that the slit width is varied and controlled so as to be located on a position d1 shown by a dotted line or a position d2 shown by a solid line by a copy mode setter. At the copying of a line drawing original, the slit width is set up to the d1, and at the copying of a half-tone original or mixed original, it is set up to the d2. Even if the half-tone original or mixed original whose density can not be easily and precisely distinguished, an image of high picture quality sufficiently reproducing the gradation of the original can be formed.
