PURPOSE:To improve the ignition performance considerably by connecting an ignition plug to an output terminal of a piezoelectric element driven through an alternating voltage and a series circuit of diodes and a current limiting means in parallel with the ignition plug. CONSTITUTION:Several cylindrical piezoelectric elements 101-103 are connected in series and contained in an element holder wherein the output terminal is connected to an ignition plug 4 and the input terminal is connected to a drive circuit 5. The drive circuit 5 comprises a control circuit 51, a time limit circuit 52 for receiving an ignition signal from an ignition timing sensor 6, an oscillation circuit 53, FF54 and an AND gate 55. The control circuit 51 receives a signal from FF54 and apply a high frequency alternating voltage produced from the oscillation circuit 53 to respective piezoelectric elements 101-103 with predetermined ignition timing. Furthermore, a series circuit of diodes 301, 302 and a current limiting means, i.e. a resistor 2 is connected in parallel with the ignition plug 4.
