PURPOSE:To obtain a polyphenylene ether of any desired MW within a short time, by polymerizing a 2,6-disubstituted phenol in the presence of a specified catalyst prepared by feeding an oxygen-containing gas. CONSTITUTION:In the production of a polyphenylene ether by oxidatively coupling a 2,6-disubstituted phenol with an oxygen-containing gas, said coupling is performed in the presence of a highly active catalyst formed by contacting a polymerization catalyst comprising a basic compound (A) selected from among the hydroxides, alkoxides and phenoxides of the Group IA metals of the periodic table, a manganese salt (B) and a prim. and/or sec. slkanolamine (C) with an oxygen-containing gas by actively feeding the gas. As the oxygen-containing gas fed during the preparation of the catalyst, a gas of an oxygen content of 5-100vol%, especially, an oxygen/nitrogen mixture containing 5vol% or above oxygen can be suitably used.
