PURPOSE:To obtain magnetic garnet characterized by little light absorption in the wavelength band of 0.8mum, by adding bivalent metal ions when a rare earth ferromagnetic garnet film including Bi is grown by a liquid epitaxy method with Bi2O3 single substance flux. CONSTITUTION:Rare earth elements Gd, Tm, Y and Fe or parts of them are substituted by a nonmagnetic element Ga or Al in a rare earth ferromagnetic film alpha including bismuth. Said film alpha undergoes liquid epitaxy on a substrate with solution including the single substance flux of Bi2O3 and the element in the film alpha. In this solution, bivalent group II A elements are added in the following way. The compound of the bivalent element and the compound of Fe or an element, which substitutes Fe, form a total amount. The ratio of the compound of the bivalent element in the total amount is determined in the range of + or -30% of the minimum value of light absorption in a 0.8mum band. Thus magnetic garnet characterized by a little light absorption at the wavelength band of 0.8mum is obtained.
