PURPOSE:To prevent jamming, by switching a mode for discharging a document by turning on drive means and a mode for discharging the document by turning off the drive means and without actuating brake means according to a length of the document in a copy machine and the like. CONSTITUTION:A length and front edge of a document 11 sent out by a pair of pull out rollers 16 is sensed by a resist sensor 20 and the document 11 is transported onto a reference position of a document placing table 21 by a belt 19. After being copied, it is discharged to a document receiving unit 21 by the belt 19 and a paper sheet discharging rollers 22, 23. In this case, a control unit switches a mode wherein a brake is applied so that the paper discharging rollers 22, 23 grip the rear end of the document and a paper sheet discharge motor 27 is driven again to discharge the document and a mode wherein the motor 27 is turned off simply and the document is discharged by its inertia according to a length of the document when a paper discharge sensor 26 senses the rear end of the document between the belt 19 and the paper discharging roller 22, 23. With such an arrangement, even a long thin document can be discharged without interruption, the rear end of the document does not remain in the discharge rollers and jamming and defective paging can be prevented.
