Spanner for tightening and loosening nuts with variable dimensions which comprises two parallel jaws 2, one fixed 1 and the other sliding 2, and a pivoting handle 4 which bears upon the jaw 2 in the direction of sliding when the handle 4 is turned in the direct direction, and disengages the jaw 2 when the handle 4 is turned in the other direction. An elastic means 6 then tends to bring the two jaws together slightly, keeping them in contact with the component to be tightened whilst allowing the spanner to pivot about the said component without disengaging it from the jaws. <IMAGE>
