The innovation relates to a cutting appliance, especially for loading trucks, the cutters of which can be pivoted out individually counter to the holding force of a spring in the event of overloading and can be pivoted back into their working position again as a result of the restoring force of the spring. At the same time, on the one hand, where fodder material which is difficult to cut is concerned, a high holding force is required for the cutters, and this is achieved by means of strong springs having a usually large space requirement. However, this type of overload protection does not allow any adjustment of the holding force for fodder material which can be cut more easily, as would be desirable for the purpose of a sensitive response of the overload protection. Moreover, these strong springs having a constantly high restoring force require very great effort to pivot them into an inoperative position. To solve this problem, there is proposed a toggle-lever system which, by using weak springs, allows high holding forces which, at the same time, can be adjusted in the simplest possible way to the particular fodder material and which consequently, in turn, allows a selectively provided pivoting into a locked inoperative position with little effort.
