The sheet material conveyor(60) has a feed roller(62) to feed sheets and a holder(64) downstream of the feed roller to temporarilly halt the forward movement. The feed roller has a drivenshaft(134) to be rotated by a driving source. An opposing shaft(136) is spaced from the driven shaft and carries a pinch roller(72) in opposition to a driven roller (70) on the driven shaft. The driven roller is mounted for free rotation on the driven shaft so that, when the forward movement of the sheet material fed by the feed roller(62) is halted by the temporary holder, the rotation of the driven roller is stopped by the resistance of the sheet.
