In an electronic computer with a central unit (10) which is controlled via a keyboard (14), and a read-write memory arrangement (12) which is connected to the central unit in the form of program and/or data memory, at least part of the read-write memory (18) in the form of data memory is integrated in the central unit (10). The program memory, and if required more data memory, are arranged in a read-write memory arrangement (12) which is outside the central unit (10), and which is divided into several memory blocks (12', 12'', 12'''), which can be controlled via separate control inputs. The memory capacity of each of the memory blocks corresponds to the capacity of the working memory which can be controlled by the central unit. The control inputs of the memory blocks can optionally be connected via a switching arrangement (26, 28) with corresponding control outputs of the central unit (10). Thus, for a given working memory capacity of the central unit, it is possible to expand the program memory capacity to an almost arbitrary extent, and central access via the individual program memory areas to the data memories (18) which are integrated in the central unit (10) is ensured. Switching between the individual memory areas (12', 12'', 12''') can be done both manually using mechanical multiple switches (26) or code switches (28), or electronically via an appropriate interface (32). <IMAGE>
