The invention relates to a safety belt retractor with a device for switching off the restoring force of a winding-up spring, which retractor contains a cam plate which bears external toothing and is connected to the shaft, and a locking means which engages on the said plate, the locking means being movable via a curved guide from a detached position into an operational position. To simplify the design and to improve the operating mechanism, provision has been made for the cam plate (15) to have on its peripheral surface three grooves (16, 17, 18) which extend parallel to the axis and are interconnected to one another by means of curved paths (19, 20), the outer toothing (21) being arranged in the outer groove (18), and for the locking means to be composed of a wire belt (24) which is mounted so as to be rotatable in a radial fashion with respect to the cam plate (15) and be axially pivotable with respect to the latter, and engages with one finger (25) in at least one of the grooves of the cam plate. <IMAGE>
