PURPOSE:To compress and reduce the information quantity of an original in the main scanning direction by switching properly the main scanning line density in response to the degree of picture information density of an original picture. CONSTITUTION:A change point counter circuit 3 is initialized to output zero at the leading of a synchronizing signal 11 from level '0' to level '1', counts the number of change points of a picture signal 13 while the synchronizing signal 11 is at level '1' and gives an output as a counter circuit output 31. An information quantity deciding circuit 2 compares the counter circuit output 31 with a comparison input 21 for deciding information quantity at the trailing of the synchronizing signal 11 from level '1' to level '0' and brings the level of an information quantity deciding result output 22 to '1' when equal or smaller. A main scanning line density switching circuit 1 outputs a picture signal sampling pulse 12 as output 14 when the information quantity deciding result output 22 is at level '0' and outputs a sampling pulse being the interleaving of k-set of sampling pulse from the total number of the picture signal sampling pulse 12 while the synchronizing signal 11 is at level '1' when the output 22 is at level '1'.
