Vehicle seat for public transport, in particular railway compartments, with a seat frame, which is fixed to the floor, and a rigid seat shell, which is composed of the seat part and back part, is held on the seat frame with the aid of a pivotable carrier and can be pivoted with its aid from a sitting position into a lying position. The seat has a function carrier which serves to produce a connection to the seat frame and which serves as a carrier for the seat shell which, for its part, is provided with an exchangeable kit comprising a cushion, a head part and an arm rest. The function carrier is provided with elongated-hole guides curving (concavely) downwards, in which the function carrier is guided on guide pins which are fixed to the frame, the pivoted arm, which carries the function part, adopting in the sitting position of the vehicle seat a position in which it is inclined forwards slightly to the vertical. The seat part is formed in two parts comprising a backside part and a leg part which is connected to the latter in an articulated manner by means of an articulated spindle, and the leg part is provided with an arm which acts as an operating lever for swivelling the leg part away from the backside part and is guided with its other end in an elongated-hole guide which curves (convexly) upwards in the manner of a circular segment.
