PURPOSE:To shorten remarkably an inspection time by recording and erasing an area of two tracks or more by a magnetic head, and reproducing successively each track by a reproducing head. CONSTITUTION:This device is provided with a magnetic recording medium 1, a part extending from the outermost peripheral track 2-1 to the innermost peripheral track 2-N of the recording medium 1, a recording head 3, and a gap 4 of the recording head 3, and has a gap width in which the part extending from the outermost peripheral track 2-1 to the innermost peripheral track 2-N can be recorded simultaneously. Also, it has a reproducing head 5 and a magnetic gap 6 of the reproducing head 5, and has a gap width corresponding to width of one track. The reproducing head 5 is constituted so that it can move successively from the outermost peripheral track 2-1 to the innermost peripheral track 2-N. In such a way, when detecting the quality of the track of the magnetic recording medium, all the tracks 2-1-2-N can be recorded and erased simultaneously, and the detection time can be shortened remarkably, comparing with a conventional device for recording and erasing one track each.
