NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R1 is alkyl or (substituted) 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic group or phenyl; R2 is methyl, difluoromethyl or ethyl; R3 is lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; X is O or S]. EXAMPLE:N'-(4-butoxy-3-methylphenyl)-N,N-dimethylurea. USE:A herbicide having high activity and broad heribicidal spectrum. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula II with the compound of formula III (Z is halogen) in a solvent such as benzene, water, etc., at 10-50 deg.C for 0.5-3hr. The reaction is carried out optionally in the presence of an acid acceptor (e.g. sodium bicarbonate). The molar ratio of the compound of formula III to the compound of formula II is 1:1.
