PURPOSE:To determine the distance from a diver to a ship and the azimuth of the shift by a relay apparatus having a size enabling the diver to carry, by transmitting the ultrasonic pulse corresponding to a value of a distance or an azimuth to the relay apparatus from the ultrasonic transmitter-receiver mounted to a ship. CONSTITUTION:An ultrasonic pulse is transmitted to a relay apparatus 31 from a ship and the azimuth and distance of the apparatus 31 is measured on the basis of the response signal from the apparatus 31. Next, a pulse is generated at the interval corresponding to an azimuth signal from a pulse interval setting circuit 13 to perform second pulse transmission. Further, the response signal of the apparatus 31 due to this pulse transmission is received and the pulse interval corresponding to a distance signal is set from the circuit 13 to perform third pulse transmission. The first pulse transmission is received from the ship in the side of the apparatus 31 and pulse inspection is performed to start a time counter 26. Subsequently, the second pulse transmission is received from the ship and pulse inspection is performed to stop the counter 26 while the counter value of the counter 26 is converted to data by a data converting circuit 28 and the azimuth of the ship is displayed on an azimuth display device 29. Similarly, the distance up to the ship is displayed on a distance display device 30. Because measuring apparatus in the apparatus 31 becomes unnecessary, the miniaturization of the apparatus is enabled.
